Image Map for SharePoint

Turn floor plans, diagrams, and org charts into navigation that works for pointer, keyboard, and screen reader users alike.

Image Map turns a diagram into navigation by placing hotspots on the image and mirroring every one in a readable list.

  • Platform: SharePoint Online
  • Licensing: Per tenant, annual
  • Accessibility: WCAG 2.2 AA

At a glance

Image Map needs your own floor plan, diagram, or chart, so there is nothing meaningful to demonstrate with placeholder art.

Image Map turns a floor plan, diagram, or org chart into navigation, so a picture becomes a set of destinations that pointer, keyboard, and screen reader users can all reach.

  • Hotspots placed visually, no coordinates by hand
  • Every hotspot mirrored in a readable list
  • Regions scale with the image on any screen

Send us a diagram and we will show you the hotspot editor working against it.

Capabilities

What Image Map does

Visual hotspot editor
Place and resize regions directly on the image, no coordinate maths required.
Rich hotspot content
Attach a link, a short description, or a details panel to each region.
Companion text list
Every hotspot also appears in a readable list beneath or beside the image.
Responsive regions
Hotspots scale with the image so they stay accurate on any screen size.
Grouping
Organise hotspots into categories with optional filtering for large diagrams.
Theme aware
Hotspot outlines and markers follow your theme while keeping required contrast.

Accessibility conformance

Image Map is developed and tested against WCAG 2.2 AA and is suitable for inclusion in an accessibility conformance report.

  • Each hotspot is a real link or button with a descriptive accessible name.
  • The companion list provides an equivalent text alternative to the visual map.
  • Hotspots follow a logical tab order and show a visible focus indicator.
  • Hotspot outlines meet 3:1 non-text contrast against the underlying image.
  • Regions respect Target Size (Minimum), with padding added to small hotspots.
  • Descriptions appear on focus as well as hover, and stay visible until dismissed.

Overview

What Image Map does

The value of this web part comes from your own imagery, so rather than invent a diagram, here is how it works.

What it is for

Image Map turns a floor plan, diagram, or org chart into navigation, so a picture becomes a set of destinations that pointer, keyboard, and screen reader users can all reach.

Key features

  • Visual hotspot editor for placing and resizing regions directly on the image
  • A companion text list that mirrors every hotspot beside the image
  • Hotspots that scale with the image so they stay accurate on any screen
  • Grouping and filters for dense diagrams with many regions

What your team gets

  • A diagram you already have becomes a wayfinding tool with no redraw
  • Nobody is excluded: the companion list is the primary route on small screens
  • Regions stay aligned when the image reflows, so links never drift off target

Image Map runs inside your tenant as a SharePoint Framework solution and follows the permissions already assigned to each page.

Data handling

Content and settings are stored with the page in SharePoint. The web part does not create a separate data store.

External services

The web part renders content from your own tenant. Any external service is one your authors choose to embed.

API permissions

Permissions requested at deployment are listed in the installation guide and approved by an administrator before use. Details to be confirmed

Tenant and access control

Answers

Frequently asked questions

What happens on a small phone screen?

The image remains pinch-zoomable and the companion list becomes the primary way to reach each destination.

How many hotspots are supported?

There is no fixed limit. For dense diagrams we recommend grouping hotspots and enabling category filters.

Can hotspots open modal details instead of navigating?

Yes. Each hotspot can either navigate or open an accessible details panel with focus management built in.
