Content Creation

Table of Contents for SharePoint

Table of Contents builds in-page navigation from your existing headings and keeps readers oriented as they scroll.

  • Platform: SharePoint Online
  • Licensing: Per tenant, annual
  • Accessibility: WCAG 2.2 AA

Interactive preview

Select an entry to jump to that heading in the sample document beside it.

Sample document

Purpose and scope

Who the policy applies to, which records it covers, and the legislation it answers to.

Retention schedule

How long each class of record is kept, and the trigger that starts the retention clock.

Financial records

Invoices, statements, and audit papers are retained for seven full financial years.

On a real page the list is generated from your headings and highlights the section in view.

Capabilities

What Table of Contents does

Automatic detection
Builds the list from heading levels two to four with no manual maintenance.
Inline or sticky
Sit the contents inside the page flow, or pin it alongside as the reader scrolls.
Current section
Highlights the section in view so readers always know where they are.
Shareable anchors
Every entry gets a stable link that can be copied and shared directly.
Exclusion rules
Omit specific headings or depths to keep the list short and useful.
Theme aware
Typography and spacing follow your SharePoint theme automatically.

Accessibility conformance

Table of Contents is developed and tested against WCAG 2.2 AA and is suitable for inclusion in an accessibility conformance report.

  • Rendered inside a navigation landmark with a descriptive accessible name.
  • Entries are a real list of links, so screen readers announce the item count.
  • The active entry is identified with aria-current, not colour alone.
  • Selecting an entry moves keyboard focus to the target heading, not just the scroll position.
  • Targets keep clear of sticky headers, supporting Focus Not Obscured (Minimum).
  • Sticky mode collapses into a disclosure on small screens and at 400 percent zoom.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

What if the page has no headings?

The web part stays hidden for readers and shows authors a prompt explaining that headings are required.

Does it update when the page is edited?

Yes. The list is generated at render time, so it always reflects the current headings.

Can we limit it to a single section?

Yes. Scope it to one page section so only the headings inside that section are listed.
